Glasgow Celtic memories: THAT magic cup win in 1972…
“MAGIC – that was Celtic!” declared the Evening Times following the Scottish Cup Final of 1972.
The Parkhead team had beaten Hibs 6 – 1 in an exciting match which left football journalist Malcolm Munro full of praise.
“It was one of the truly great finals,” he said.
“Celtic playing European Cup-winning football, whipped gallant Hibs 6-1 before 106,000 people at Hampden. It was a beautiful, glorious occasion.”
The story continued: “Six goals to one …you’d assume that indicates a really one-sided game. But it wasn’t. Hibs were good but they got the champs on one of their best days…”
There had been disappointment before the game when two key Celtic players, David Hay and Harry Hood, were deemed unfit due of injury.
Man of the match was Dixie Deans, participating in his first cup final, who did a magnificent trick and a breathtaking ‘roly poly’ cart wheel on the pitch after number three.
It was also Jim Craig’s last game for Celtic – not a bad way to end a brilliant career.
