Flashes of the old Marcus Rashford were insufficient for Aston Villa to defeat 10-man Ipswich, but it was encouraging to see the banned Manchester United star shine in his first Premier League outing in two months. Rashford, who was frozen out by Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, is in the Midlands on loan and looking for redemption. While it’s weird to watch him in claret and blue, he was in good form, gliding past defenders and setting up Villa’s goal with a fantastic free kick. Rashford last appeared in the league for United against Nottingham Forest on December 7, but Unai Emery did not hesitate to turn to the 27-year-old at half-time after Ipswich’s Axel Tuanzebe was sent off, opening up more space for Villa.
Though the visitors took a surprise lead with a beautiful finish from Liam Delap after 56 minutes, Rashford was the catalyst who brought his new teammates back into the game. His set-piece curler from 25 yards hit the post and dropped, allowing Ollie Watkins to equalise. Rashford was also denied a goal by an outstanding save from Ipswich goalkeeper Alex Palmer, who was playing his first Premier League game at the age of 28.

‘It was a bad one for me,’ he admitted. ‘I believe it was a decision made between a smaller team and a larger team away from home. It was out of the pocket before the ball had stopped moving. On Rashford’s impact after being out of action for so long, Villa manager Unai Emery said: “He is improving. He played 45 minutes, felt comfortable, is gradually getting fit, and will help us in the upcoming matches. Watkins returned from a groin injury for Villa, who also gave debut to defender Axel Disasi, who is on loan from Chelsea. Palmer, signed from West Brom last month, had a nerve-racking beginning as he collided with Rogers who wanted a free-kick on the edge of the box and possibly a red card for his opponent.
Referee Robert Jones wasn’t interested and neither was VAR Michael Oliver.
