Steven Gerrard’s next job? Liverpool legend would ‘jump at the opportunity’ to join Blackburn after using Saudi Pro League as a stepping stone to another coaching role in England.
Steven Gerrard may have another job in mind, with Danny Murphy claiming the Liverpool star would “jump at the opportunity” to coach Blackburn Rovers.
What happened?
Gerrard, a former England captain, is currently unemployed after leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq. A stint in the Middle East did not go as planned, following a disastrous debut in the Premier League with Aston Villa.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers and utilized a stay in Saudi Arabia to return to England as a coach. One has recently opened at Ewood Park, with John Eustace leaving Blackburn to take over at Derby.
What Danny Murphy said:
Murphy, an ex-Liverpool teammate of Gerrard, believes that if offered the job, Gerrard would be keen to return to the dugout. It’s a terrific place for him since he’s from there, and they have some strong young players who are moving in the right direction.
“He could think about what he learnt in Saudi and who makes the choices at the club. I believe that all managers develop while in their jobs, and he would have certainly progressed at both Aston Villa and Saudi.
“I think being in Saudi was merely to keep him going after Aston Villa, and you could say it was a role that came too soon in his managing career, despite the fact that he did well there. He would have learnt a lot from it, and with the Blackburn position, I believe he would leap at the chance.”
What is next for Steven Gerrard?
Blackburn are well-positioned in the Championship, sitting fifth in the second-tier standings and on track to challenge for a play-off berth. Gerrard may opt to take on the job of leading the former Premier League champions back to the top level.
