Due to the season-long absence of defender Di’Shon Bernard and the ongoing illness of influential captain Barry Bannan, who has missed the last two games due to “mystery” surrounding his recovery, Sheffield Wednesday appears to be missing two key players going into their matchup with Coventry City on Saturday.
On Wednesday night, the Owls captain watched from home as his team defeated Swansea City 1-0, the second straight game he has missed due to injury. Furthermore, manager Danny Röhl has been unable to provide a specific timeframe, ranging from one week to six, so there is still no clear indication of when he might return to action.
Josh Windass assumed Bannan’s armband in a more profound role than usual, and Svante Ingelsson and Shea Charles successfully moved into Wednesday’s midfield in South Wales.
When The Star questioned Röhl for an update on Bannan’s recuperation before of the match against the Sky Blues, he replied, “It is difficult to say.” Seven days, six weeks, or four weeks could pass. We must examine the response. It has to do with managing the load and regulating the response.
He had an issue throughout the QPR game. He was unable to walk for three days following the Luton game, despite our best efforts to control it during the week. Let’s now examine its meaning in the following days.
Meanwhile, Bernard has had surgery and will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee problem.
After receiving treatment for a problem a few minutes earlier, the Jamaican international was substituted late in the first half of Saturday’s loss to West Bromwich Albion. He attempted to ground off the ball both times and appeared upset when removed; Wednesday manager Danny Röhl subsequently allayed concerns that the injury’s initial prognosis was “serious.”
The 24-year-old has been a constant for the team and has started every Championship game this season save for one due to minor injuries and suspensions, so it is a huge blow to Wednesday.
