The man between the sticks began his career in football with Sunderland after coming through their youth academy in 1972. However, he found game time hard to come by as he made just 13 appearances before leaving for Carlisle United in 1977. Swinburne made the move to Yorkshire in 1985 where he played two games for Leeds United before departing the following year.
Gray also came through Sunderland’s youth setup and made his debut in 1992 for the club. He spent the next 12 years of his career with his boyhood club and racked up 363 appearances and netted 16 goals. He went on to join Leeds United on loan in 2004 from Blackburn where he played on 10 occasions and later re-joined the Whites for a second loan spell and made an additional six appearances.
Harte made his professional footballing debut in 1996 whilst with Leeds United and remained with the club until the end of the 2003/04 campaign. Overall, the set-piece specialist played 288 games and netted 39 goals during his time in Yorkshire. After spending the next three years with Spanish club Levante, Harte moved to Sunderland where he spent one season with the Black Cats and played eight times for the club.
In 1998, Butler signed for Sunderland and achieved promotion to the Premier League in his first season. He remained with the club until 2001 when he sealed a permanent move to Wolves. Overall, the defender played 79 games for the Black Cats and scored three goals. Leeds later secured his signature from Wolves in 2004 and went on to feature 104 times and net four goals for the Whites.
The defender joined Sunderland ahead of the 2004/05 campaign but he was sent out on three loan spells and found minutes on the pitch difficult to come by during his time with the club. He made 18 appearances before departing permanently in 2007. Leeds United secured his signature in 2010 on loan but the deal was soon made permanent. The defender played on 32 occasions and scored one goal for the Whites.
Liam Miller made the move to Leeds on loan from Manchester United in November 2005 and scored one goal during his 33 appearances for the Whites – the winning goal in a 4-3 away win against Southampton. Following his release from his parent club, Miller went on to sign for Sunderland. He achieved promotion to the Premier League with the Black Cats in his first season and overall, scored three goals in 60 games for the club.
Capable of playing in both defence and midfield, Matteo played just one game for Sunderland back in 1995. He joined the Black Cats on loan from Liverpool but soon returned to his parent club. Matteo signed for Leeds United ahead of the 2000/01 season and went on to feature in the Champions League, UEFA Cup and racked up 146 appearances during his time with the Whites.
During his playing days in the 1910s and 1920s, Sherwin played as an old-fashioned wing half. Sherwin played for Sunderland between 1913 and 1921 and made 28 appearances during this period. He signed directly for Leeds United from the Black Cats and went on to play 108 times for the Whites before signing for Barnsley in 1925.
The LUFC legend made the move to Sunderland in October 1956 from Manchester City and remained with the club until 1958. During this time, Revie scored 15 goals in 66 appearances as a deep-lying centre forward. Following the Black Cats’ relegation to the Second Division, he moved to Elland Road ahead of the 1958/59 campaign for Leeds United. Revie netted 12 goals in 80 games for the Whites and officially become player-manager in March 1961. The rest, as you know, is history.
Bridges came through Sunderland’s youth academy and made his professional debut for the Black Cats back in 1995. After emerging as one of the most promising young strikers in the Premier League, he signed for Leeds United in 1999. Bridges remained with Leeds until 2004 and managed to score 21 goals in 82 appearances during his time with the club.
After joining Leeds from Wigan Athletic in 2020, so far, the forward has played 57 games and scored three goals – the majority of which coming off the bench as a substitute. The 22-year-old was sent out on loan to Sunderland in January 2023 as he helped the Black Cats reach the Championship play-offs. Gelhardt netted three goals in 20 appearances for the club before returning to Leeds at the end of the season.
