Wolves supporters might breathe a sigh of relief after talisman Matheus Cunha committed to the club beyond the January transfer window.

Six Premier League teams, including Arsenal, expressed interest in Cunha, but Wolves remained confident in their ability to retain their star forward.

Cunha’s new contract at Wolves has a £62.5 million release clause, making him a target for large clubs in the summer.

For the time being, fans may enjoy watching their Brazilian maestro at work, as he has scored an astounding 12 goals in 25 outings across all competitions.

Cunha set a record against Blackburn, being the first player in Europe’s top five divisions to have 5+ shots on target and 5+ tackles in a single match.

Surprisingly, this is not the only excellent team that the 25-year-old has joined this season.

Matheus Cunha has reached double figures in Premier League goals in consecutive seasons.

Since joining from Atletico Madrid for £44 million in January 2023, the Brazil international has emerged as one of the division’s greatest attackers.

Under Gary O’Neil, Cunha’s goal-scoring abilities skyrocketed last season, scoring 12 Premier League goals alongside Hwang Hee-chan.

While the South Korean attacker has trended in the opposite direction this season, Cunha has stepped up even more, scoring 11 goals in the top division with 14 games left.

Wolves’ hero has scored double-digit Premier League goals in two consecutive seasons, a feat only achieved twice before.

Player Goals / Season
Raul Jimenez 17 / 2019/20
Raul Jimenez 13 / 2018/19
Steven Fletcher 12 / 2011/12
Steven Fletcher 10 / 2010/11

Raul Jimenez, a Mexican player, achieved double digits in the Premier League twice during their two seasons in the Europa League, while Steven Fletcher did so in 2010/11 and 2011/12.

Wolves’ top Premier League scores

Cunha, like Jimenez, has scored 10 or more goals in consecutive seasons; nonetheless, the Brazilian is unlikely to become Wolves’ all-time Premier League scorer.

If his long-term future at Molineux was secured, he’d break the record, but given that he’s expected to leave in the summer, he has little chance of surpassing Jimenez’s total of 40.

Player Wolves all-time Premier League scorer
Raul Jimenez 40 goals
Matheus Cunha 25 goals
Steven Fletcher 22 goals
Hwang Hee-chan 22 goals
Ruben Neves 21 goals

Cunha is presently 15 points short of tying the Mexican striker, and it would take something extraordinary from Wolves to persuade him to remain long enough to break it.
