Denis Law: The King in pictures from Aberdeen days to Manchester United glory

From a childhood in Aberdeen to the Ballon d’Or victory. From modest origins, Denis Law became a football hero and a member of Manchester United’s “holy trinity.”

Younger generations of fans worldwide, as well as those surrounding him at the club and national levels, found inspiration in King Denis. He was revered by fans, feared by opponents, and loved by teammates.

He was an extrovert, a free spirit, a unique individual, and a rare blend of status and influence, brilliance and impudence. Examining images from our library to pay tribute to the King’s remarkable life and leave a visual legacy.

George Law, a fisherman, and his wife, Robina, welcomed Denis Law into the world on February 24, 1940, in Aberdeen, Scotland. Of the seven children—four boys and three girls—he was the youngest. Living in a council tenement flat at Printfield Terrace in Woodside Aberdeen, the Law family was impoverished. The gifted youngster wore inherited shoes during his adolescence and went barefoot until he was twelve. When Denis was a teenager, a neighbor gave him his first set of football boots as a used birthday present.

When he had the money, Law watched Aberdeen, and when he didn’t, he watched local non-league teams.He turned down a spot at Aberdeen Grammar School since he would have had to play rugby there due to his football passion; instead, he went to Powis Acadamy in Aberdeen.

He had a severe squint, but after being switched from full back to inside-left, he showed a lot of promise and was chosen for the Scotland Schoolboys.Denis began playing football at the age of 15 and was a gifted young player ahead of his time. After spending 11 years at Old Trafford, the King finished third on United’s all-time goal scoring list with 237 goals in 404 games, behind Wayne Rooney and his former teammate Bobby Charlton. As the first English team to win the FA Cup and the European Cup, Lawman won two league titles during his tenure at the club (image PA).

After Manchester United defeated Leicester City in the FA Cup Final on May 25, 1963, Denis Law and David Herd sip champagne in the Wembley dressing room.

Denis Law sets a new goal record of 30 Scotland goals in 1972 at Hampden against Northern Ireland, surpassing goalkeeper Pat Jennings.
