Michael Smith was the hero once again as Sheffield Wednesday secured a very rare away win at Swansea City.
The Owls striker came off the bench to score the winning goal in Swansea, giving Wednesday their first victory in the Swans’ backyard since 1983, long before any of the current players were born.
There was some late drama when the hosts thought they had scored a last-gasp equaliser, but it was ruled out shortly before the final whistle, and Danny Röhl’s team won all three points. They are now ranked seventh in the Championship.
Here’s how we ranked the players after a fantastic night in Wales:
1. James Beadle – 7
He was a spectator in the first half but stooped rapidly to stop Peart-Harris from opening the scoring early in the second half. Claimed the ball late in the game, when it was most required, and used it to slow things down effectively. He did a good job mixing his distribution.
2. Yan Valery – 8
Drove well from defence and made numerous crucial defensive interventions, most notably with his head, with which he won more aerial duels than anybody else on the pitch. Plenty of opportunities in both directions – he appears to be a really good player on evenings like that.
3. Michael Ihiekwe – 8
Early on, there were a number of big headers, but it was carefully managed. I kept it simple in possession and transferred it carefully. Marshalled everything like a smart colonel.
4. Max Lowe – 8
There were critical moments on more than one occasion. He has a sense of danger and is Wednesday’s most consistent performer. Colder than a polar bear’s pantry.
