Tony Mowbray takes aim at West Brom players following defeat to Blackburn Rovers
Makhtar Gueye’s double in the second half caused the Baggies to lose 2-0.
With both teams fighting for spots in the Championship play-offs, it was a crucial match.
After the final whistle, Mowbray shared his thoughts on the performance, expressing his anger with the defensive unit in particular.
“I’m having to tell the defenders that it’s got to hurt like hell if they lose a goal,” Mowbray remarked when asked about the match. A huge guy at the back heads a corner as it comes up, and the center-forward slams it in. It’s such a soft goal. It’s not possible and it’s too simple.
“You have to take it personally because I know what motivates me to win every game. That’s what football was all about when I played. If I had been playing, that first goal would never have occurred. You have to take it personally, but I shouldn’t bring up thirty years ago.
“I don’t think they would have scored the opening goal today if [Kyle] Bartley had played. They [Blackburn] don’t experience it; they are touched, they head it out, and they put themselves in the way. Why do we not do that? I have to investigate that further and remove the layers.
With an away trip to Millwall this weekend, West Brom doesn’t have much time to regroup.
Mowbray continued by talking to BirminghamWorld about what he believes the Baggies need in order to secure a play-off spot.
The West Brom manager stated, “It feels like you have to be on a good run to find yourself in the top six when the wheels stop turning in May.” “When I was at Sunderland, we had to rely on everyone else’s results. If you don’t win games, you won’t get there.” “You have to get to 70 points or maybe more. It doesn’t matter which games you win, we’ve got to find a way from 14 games to win half of them. That’s where we are, and we have to accept it. We try to find consistency, we try to find the players who can do the job, and I do think we’ve got a good squad.”
