“Really wanted to come here.” The player took a pay cut in January to ensure his departure from Aston Villa.

During the January transfer window, Kosta Nedeljkovic “waived his salary” to join RB Leipzig from Aston Villa.

Nedeljkovic reportedly accepted a financial hit to secure a transfer away from Aston Villa, according to journalist Philipp Hinze. On the last day of the winter transfer window, the right-back joined the German team on loan, staying until the end of the season, while Leipzig has the option to buy him outright for €15 million.

Aston Villa is obviously open to a sale despite their right-back issues this season, and all signs point to the Bundesliga team looking to make that move permanent in the summer. Hinze claims that Nedeljkovic “waived his salary” to guarantee the transfer to Leipzig, suggesting that he is also eager to make the change.

He doesn’t go into detail about what that means because it’s clear that Nedeljkovic isn’t playing for free in Germany and never will be. Since Leipzig didn’t want to pay in whole, we’ll infer that means the young player waived a portion of his Aston Villa income to get the move.

In any case, they view it as a significant plus and evidence that the Serbian “genuinely wanted” to travel in the window to Leipzig. We’ll wait till later in the season before getting thrilled on their behalf, as we think that might be a bit of German propaganda at this time.
