In the 89th minute of Tuesday’s FA Cup match against Exeter, Awoniyi sustained a serious head injury that required a penalty shootout for Forest to win.
According to manager Nuno Espirito Santo, the player was undergoing examinations on Thursday to see whether he needs to complete a 12-day concussion protocol or whether he is healthy enough to return to training before the trip to Craven Cottage.
Nuno stated: “He is in pain because he broke his nose. We are waiting for the proper procedures to be followed. Due to a concussion, we have to wait and see if he is available.” We must exercise caution.
He appears to be in good health. He grinned; he is in pain, but we must exercise caution in these circumstances. We’ll see if he’s available after the proper procedures are followed, which should take two or three days.
On Thursday afternoon, Awoniyi was being measured for a mask that would allow him to play with his fractured nose in the event that he passed the concussion tests.
“He is in that situation,” Nuno continued. He is examining his mask because the measurements must be correct. He’s awaiting it.

More than anything, I am unsure if he will be available at this moment because we are awaiting the approval of the concussion protocols. We must wait.
Winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is expected to return to the squad following a groin injury.
“It’s going well; he joined the group yesterday and participated in the sessions today,” Nuno continued. We can still evaluate him tomorrow. We still have one session with a lot of guys and knocks.
“I am certain, but we must wait until he is fully recovered.”
It was a very late night, with the team returning to the City Ground around two in the morning due to Awoniyi’s injury and Forest’s need to play extra time against the Grecians.
‘It will have an influence but the best approach is that it is positive,’ Nuno remarked. However, we succeeded. It is always better to prepare for a match after you have already won.
