Michael Carrick emphasizes’responsibility’ as criticism on Middlesbrough manager mounts.
Michael Carrick, Middlesbrough’s head coach, recognises his responsibilities to address the team’s present slump, as pressure mounts due to their poor performance.
Boro lost their third consecutive match against Sheffield United on Wednesday evening. Despite significant investment in the last two transfer windows, they now lie ninth in the Championship table, with only two wins in ten. He realised that his league place was not sufficient.
With only 15 games remaining in a season that marked Boro’s greatest chance for promotion back to the Premier League, old concerns that have not been resolved all season threaten to undermine their aspirations. There would be no hiding from the truth that failing to reach the play-offs this season would be a failure given the resources, with many supporters, including those at Bramall Lane on Wednesday evening, beginning to express their unhappiness.
It should be stressed that, at this point, there is no evidence that any dramatic measures are being considered internally. For the time being, the pressure on the Boro manager is coming from the outside, with elements of the Boro away end expressing their dissatisfaction with the club’s failing style of play at full-time. With a big home game against out-of-form Watford on Saturday, Carrick will need his team to provide a performance worthy of changing the attitude on Teesside.
For the time being, as difficult as it may be for disgruntled Boro fans to swallow, Carrick insists Boro must maintain their composure internally. He stated, “We must remain calm, but we must also accept what we need to improve and what isn’t going our way as a group.”
“Ultimately, that is my responsibility, and I embrace it. There is definitely a sense of calm. We need to think carefully and judge things correctly. We have another game on Saturday, and we will be more prepared. It’s another major game, so we need to move quickly. The belief does not change; we still have a strong belief.”
