Exclusive: Ex-PGMOL chief ‘sad’ as Kuhn’s Celtic strike disallowed vs Bayern Munich.
Celtic were unfortunate to have a “terrific goal” ruled out for offside in their Champions League match against Bayern Munich, according to Keith Hackett.
The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official confirmed to Football Insider that disallowing Nicolas Kuhn’s goal due to Adam Idah’s offside was the correct call.
Celtic were hoping to capitalize on the raucous home crowd at Celtic Park, and they felt they had surprised the German powerhouse after only 26 seconds.
However, following a frenzied opening in which the Scottish champions took the lead, Bayern proceeded to exert control of the game.
Celtic were seeking for a replacement for Daizen Maeda in January, after the Japanese winger was suspended for striking out at a Young Boys player during a Champions League encounter, but his suspension was reduced in time for him to face the Bavarian club.
Brendan Rodgers has expressed dissatisfaction with Celtic’s lack of recruits, including the loss of Kyogo Furuhashi to Rennes in January.
Keith Hackett provides his assessment on Nicolas Kuhn’s Celtic goal.
Just 26 seconds into the game, Kuhn scooped up the ball on the right flank and cut inside Raphael Guerreiro.
After beating the Portuguese wing-back, the German winger surged towards the box and thumped an attempt through a mass of players, giving Manuel Neuer no chance as it reached the back of the net.
Celtic Park exploded, but the celebrations were cut short as the linesman raised his flag.
When the official reviewed the tape, he noticed that Idah was obscuring the German goalkeeper’s vision, yet allowing the ball to pass between his legs.

Michael Olise scored the first goal against Celtic.
Idah was identified as a surprise target for Arsenal in January after scoring twice against Aston Villa in the Champions League, and Celtic will need the young Irishman to give a similar performance if they are to have a chance against the Germans.
Hackett, previous PGMOL chairman, expressed regret at the Celtic goal being properly called out for offside when contacted by Football Insider.
“A fantastic goal, but unfortunately the guy was offside. “The assistant’s flag was correct.”
Bayern Munich score first in Champions League tie with Michael Olise thunderbolt.
Celtic were outstanding in the first few minutes of the game, but eventually failed to match Vincent Kompany’s talent.
Michael Olise, who had been a menace throughout the first half, delivered a spectacular finish in the 44th minute, cutting inside with his left foot and smashing an unstoppable shot past Kasper Schmeichel.
