Phil Parkinson made two changes to the starting lineup for the round against Port Vale. Max Cleworth and Harry Ashfield were replaced by Lewis Brunt and Jack Marriott, and the Red Dragons lined up in a 3-5-2 shape. In the first half, the visitors created few scoring opportunities as Bolton dominated. Arthur Okonkwo produced a pair of excellent stops to ensure his team had a clean sheet going into the interval.
Bolton continued to dominate possession as the game began after halftime. Wrexham’s lack of mobility on the pitch pushed Parkinson to make four substitutions soon after the hour mark. The substitutions undoubtedly revived the squad, as Andy Cannon ultimately broke the deadlock in the 70th minute with a spectacular long-range shot. The center midfielder received a ball from George Evans and blasted into the net from about 20 yards out.
Cannon’s goal proved to be the difference as the Welsh team advanced to the EFL Trophy semi-finals. They will now face Peterborough United, while Birmingham City, led by Tom Brady, will play Bradford City, Parkinson’s previous side, in the other semi-final.
The MVP
Cannon, who had started the scoring for his team in their last game against Port Vale, proved to be Wrexham’s hero once more, scoring the all-important winner to keep the club’s hopes of reaching the EFL Trophy final at Wembley alive.
The Big Loser
Despite dominating the first 60 minutes of the game, Bolton’s forwards struggled to score goals. Okonkwo made many excellent stops, including deflecting Josh Sheehan’s spectacular strike away from goal on the stroke of halftime.
What happens next?
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s team return to League One action on Saturday, when they face Northampton Town.
