Opinion: QPR might need a miracle to re-sign new loan favourite in the summer window

Few people anticipated another period of intensive or costly recruitment in January because QPR was busy throughout the summer transfer window.

Rather, the Rs concentrated on only fortifying where necessary, bringing in good prospects like Harvey Vale and Esquerdinha on permanent agreements and providing some important depth through loans.

QPR boss Marti Cifuentes

Ronnie Edwards was one of the loan signings. The center-back arrived at Loftus Road with a solid reputation and is considered a great talent following his stint at Peterborough United, but he had very little playing time with Premier League team Southampton.

It’s safe to argue that Edwards has improved QPR since joining the team. Regretfully, it appears like the ancient proverb “never fall in love with loan players” is coming to pass once more.

Catching the eye with QPR

Edwards has only made eight appearances since taking on his loan from QPR. Despite having a difficult debut as Marti Cifuentes’ team conceded six goals in an FA Cup defeat to Leicester City, the 21-year-old has secured a starting position and appears to be difficult to unseat.

On the ball, the Southampton loanee has displayed an incredible degree of poise. Despite the increase in competition from his stint in League One, he has managed to keep his progressive style of passing and carrying the ball out, which is a consistent quality of a good player.

It doesn’t seem like Edwards will be leaving anytime soon, even though Liam Morrison and Morgan Fox are also possibilities. If anything, valuable veteran Steve Cook would be replaced at center-back before Edwards.

Fans have, predictably, prayed for Edwards to stay after his loan, either on a second temporary assignment or in a very ambitious permanent contract. However, that might require a small miracle.

Destined for bigger things

It might be argued that Edwards ought to have been a Southampton player in the Premier League. The new QPR favorite wasn’t getting opportunities in the Premier League, even when they were at their worst.

But it’s obvious that his skill belongs in a higher division given how well he has adapted to Championship level.
