New West Brom coach reveals how close he came to signing Super Eagles striker at Blackburn.
Tony Mowbray, the new coach of West Brom, has claimed that he was close to acquiring Super Eagles attacker Josh Maja when at Blackburn Rovers.
Maja, who is recuperating from a leg injury, is West Brom’s leading scorer this season, with 12 goals in 26 games.
However, Maja’s injury has kept him out of action since mid-January, and Mowbray is wary about his comeback.
Mowbray is aware of Maja’s potential, having attempted to sign him for Blackburn Rovers in the past.
He sees Maja as a quality player who can help West Brom reach their aims.
Maja’s playing style, which includes coming to the ball, using his technical talents, and going into the box to score goals, makes him a crucial member of the squad.
According to Birmingham Live, Mowbray stated, “I believe he is currently present in the building.”
“I haven’t had a one-on-one with him yet, but I know Josh from when we tried to recruit him at Blackburn Rovers a few years ago.
“It didn’t happen, but he’s a good child. I saw several commentators choose their EFL team of the year, and he was chosen, indicating that he had a great season.
“I am genuinely looking forward to working with him. We chose him at Blackburn because we saw him as a player who could contribute, and we have inherited him at this club.
“I’m looking forward to working with him on the grass and the type of player he is – he likes to come to the ball, technically good but he gets in the box and scores goals.”
Mowbray is also being cautious regarding Maja’s return to fitness, making sure he is not pushed back onto the field.
The manager confirmed that Maja has undergone surgery and would need some time to heal before being reintegrated into the group.
The former Sunderland player, who previously played for Manchester City as a kid, joined the Baggies in the summer of 2023 on a three-year contract from French club Bordeaux.
