Di’Shon Bernard injury update spells horror blow for Sheffield Wednesday
According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday has not received positive news from another medical evaluation over an
injury sustained by key man defender Di’Shon Bernard.
After receiving treatment for a problem a few minutes earlier, the Jamaican international was substituted late in the
first half of their Saturday loss to West Bromwich Albion. He attempted to ground off the ball both times and
appeared upset when removed; Wednesday manager Danny Röhl subsequently allayed concerns that the injury’s
initial prognosis was “serious.”
The Star is aware that the prognosis for Bernard’s condition has not improved in the days following the injury, and
that the defender is likely to miss the remainder of the season recovering. The 24-year-old has been a constant for
the team and has started every Championship game this season save for one due to minor injuries and suspensions,
so it is undoubtedly a huge blow to Wednesday.
It is thought that Barry Bannan, the captain of the Owls, is still in the same predicament and that more discussions
will be held regarding his expected return date after missing the Hawthorns loss. He is not anticipated to play in this
evening’s match against Swansea City.
Due to his injury, Wednesday will have to consider their options at the back. Bernard is now one of the Owls
defenders on the long-term injured list, along with Akin Famewo and Dominic Iorfa. Röhl has mentioned the mid-
March international break as a possible goal date for a step-up in Famewo and Iorfa’s comeback. Both players are
making progress in their recuperation and have returned to the Middlewood Road fields.
In order to smooth the two teams’ return to competition, Röhl added that Wednesday might try to arrange a friendly
behind closed doors during the break.
