Tommy Conway’s goalscoring vow as he makes Middlesbrough return after Latte Lath exit

Tommy Conway made his first Middlesbrough appearance in more than a month, coming off the bench against Sunderland.

Tommy Conway, who returned from injury shortly after Emmanuel Latte Lath’s departure, is determined to assist Middlesbrough achieve success this season.

Conway competed with Latte Lath in friendly matches throughout the first part of the season and had eight goals, a better goals-per-minute ratio than the Ivorian, before suffering a hamstring injury on Boxing Day. In his absence, Latte Lath went to the top of the scoring lists with 11 goals before leaving in a club-record deal with MLS team Atlanta United.

In this aspect, Conway’s return from injury against Sunderland was timely, as he came off the bench. After another week of training, he hopes to make his first start for Boro against Sheffield United on Wednesday. He now has new competition in the form of Kelechi Iheanacho, who signed on loan from Sevilla on transfer deadline day and will look to make his Boro debut against the Blades.

Conway, on how he intends to contribute to Boro’s season-ending success, said: “I’m just doing what I can when I can.” I work hard, and whatever happens to me, occurs. When I play, I give it my all, hoping to score or help in any way I can. Whether it’s in my overall performance or a specific aim, I’m just trying to help the team as much as possible.

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to score many more goals and lead us to triumph this season. I don’t think about how many goals we’ve scored since it’s all about the team rather than individual competitiveness. Whoever scores the goals, I hope to continue contributing to the team’s success.”

With Iheanacho a new face at Boro, Conway will seek to capitalise on his previous experience on Teesside. Though he has only been with the club since the summer following a large move from Bristol City, he has found it very easy to settle in on Teesside – which could be a good sign for the six new recruits last month who will also need to swiftly settle in as Boro attempt to turn their bad record around.

The striker said: “I enjoy coming in every day to work with the manager and learn new things, and the dressing room is fantastic as well. We always have a nice chuckle, which helps us settle in.

“Hayden [Hackney’s Scotland U21 teammate] also helped. I was on the phone with Hayden for a couple of weeks before I came to get a feel for the club and the neighbourhood, and he sold it to me. Then Doaky came in through the window, so it was nice to see familiar faces. But I also enjoy meeting new individuals and developing new relationships. So far, I’ve really enjoyed my time here.
