Rebekah Vardy is accused of trying to ‘derail’ the latest stage of Wagatha Christie libel battle against Coleen Rooney over payment of legal costs with a ‘fishing expedition’ for more documents, High Court hears

It has been alleged that Rebekah Vardy launched a “fishing expedition” for papers in an attempt to sabotage the most recent phase of her dispute with Coleen Rooney over Wagatha Christie.

Following a damages award, the lawyers representing Mrs. Vardy, the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, are requesting that the London High Court require Mrs. Rooney’s team to turn over “privileged” papers and information regarding her claim for VAT.

After Mrs. Vardy lost a 2022 lawsuit alleging libel, she was ordered to pay 90% of Mrs. Rooney’s fees, which came to almost £1.8 million.

Her attorneys are contesting the amount and want further details regarding retainers between the wife of former Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney and her attorneys during a hearing on Tuesday.

The High Court heard that although the £1.8 million cost includes £302,300.39 in VAT, Mrs. Rooney’s counsel have already recouped a portion of it.

Unredacted copies of two correspondences between Mrs. Rooney and her counsel have been requested by Mrs. Vardy’s legal team.

Mrs. Rooney, who has been married to former England captain Wayne since 2008, accused Mrs. Vardy in 2019 of disclosing personal information to the media on social media. She was quickly called “Wagatha Christie” online for her investigative work.

Mrs. Vardy filed a libel suit against her, but in July 2022, Mrs. Justice Steyn determined that the accusation was “substantially true.”
