Thousands of model railway enthusiasts descend on Blackburn

The 14th annual exhibition of the Blackburn and East Lancashire Model Railway Society was held at King George’s

Hall in Blackburn in October 1979, drawing thousands of railway enthusiasts.

Hundreds of model trains operating approximately 15 new layouts at what was considered one of Britain’s premier

shows drew visitors from all over the nation.

One of the newly created layouts was a recreation of the Wilpshire Railway Station and its environs in the 1930s.

There were also layouts depicting Helmshore and Birchley.

Blackburn Model Engineers gave rides behind their steam engines and displayed several static models for the public

to wander around.

While British Rail put on films about the railways for everyone who attended.
