‘I’m not stupid’ – Frank Lampard provides verdict on Coventry City’s FA Cup exit at hands of Ipswich Town

Even though Coventry City was primarily responsible for their own demise against Premier League Ipswich Town,

who eliminated them from the FA Cup, Frank Lampard remained uncritical of his team.

The Sky Blues manager acknowledged that he “didn’t like” the mistakes that allowed three of the visitors’ four goals

in the fourth-round match at the CBS Arena, but he thought his Championship club played well against the Tractor

Boys, who are now ranked second from the bottom of the first division.

When Jamie Allen lost control at kickoff and a quick Town onslaught led to Liam Kitching fouling Sam Szmodics to

give up a penalty, City hit the self-destruct button in the first half. Six minutes later, Joel Latibeaudiere equalized

with a spectacular near-post header from a corner, but Jayden Philogene scored a brace from Jack Clarke shortly

after the hour.

After the 4-1 loss, City’s head coach stated, “I thought the performance was OK, thought it was a competitive game

against a Premier League team.”

“I believe we likely had the advantage in possession and opportunities, and perhaps we had the advantage overall.

It’s sad because they had better opportunities, most of which were caused by our blunders. Apart than that, I don’t

believe the score accurately captures the essence of the match. In my opinion, it’s simply a fact of life for us.

“It was a competitive game, and even if you take away the goals—which we obviously can’t—you can still see that we

did some positive things in the match. the way we continued to push in the second half. Perhaps if we had achieved

our objective, which was forbidden…

“There were a couple of defensive errors but other than that it’s probably the clinical nature of them at the top end of

the pitch compared to us is a bit different. But other than that there’s not so much I can complain about really.”

“They are a team that were incredibly good in the league last year and are currently contending in the Prem,” he

continued. “But, aside from the scoreline, I didn’t perceive any difference in the game, personally. Again, I’m not a

moron, and that’s the truth, but I believe we can win a lot of the game, so yes, we need to move things in a

constructive direction.

“As always, we need to examine the mistakes because I really dislike some of them, but it’s what it is.”
