Jahmai Simpson-Pusey is expecting further first team opportunities this season
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has continued to support academy graduate Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, despite rejecting down three loan bids for the young defender in January. Simpson-Pusey made his professional debut for the champions on October 30, 2024, coming on as a second-half substitute in the final 16 minutes of the team’s 2-1 loss in the EFL Cup at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 19-year-old remained in and around the first team for the following weeks, making his professional debut in a 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP, Ruben Amorim’s final European match in the Portuguese capital before moving on to pastures new with Manchester United. Simpson-Pusey has made six senior appearances for the Sky Blues, the most recent being an 8-0 FA Cup triumph over Salford City. However, in recent weeks, he has found it more difficult to get first-team minutes following the winter arrivals of Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov, as well as the recovery of John Stones from injury.
Manchester City reject loan offers for Jahmai Simpson-Pusey
Jahmai Simpson-Pusey is still in the early phases of his professional career, but his performance at the young level implies he has a high ceiling in the game. His defensive awareness, strength, and organisational abilities have piqued the interest of Championship play-off contenders Sheffield Wednesday, Spanish second division club Real Zaragoza, and La Liga top six contenders Rayo Vallecano, all of which made loan offers for the defender in January.
Fabrizio Romano, on the other hand, understands that Pep Guardiola appreciates Simpson-Pusey and wants to keep him in the City group to maximize his potential for the rest of the season.
He wrote on X: “Real Zaragoza, Rayo Vallecano, and Sheffield Wednesday have all approached Manchester City about signing Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan in January.” No green light from the club since City wanted to keep him.”
Jahmai Simpson-Pusey’s career so far
Jahmai Simpson-Pusey joined Manchester City’s academy when he was eight years old, following trials with many big Premier League clubs. The muscular defender advanced quickly through the club’s junior system and led the City U18 team in 2023/2024, winning the FA junior Cup alongside Jaden Heskey (son of former Liverpool great Emile) and brilliant winger Justin Oboavwoduo.
“Being at City and people knowing you were a part of the Youth Cup winning team is a big deal,” Simpson-Pusey told the Manchester Evening News. In an exclusive interview with Manchester World earlier this season, Simpson-Pusey said that he was considered for a loan move over the summer before demonstrating his worth to Guardiola in training. He stated, “I feel like because I’m training over there and being around the best and having the best manager in the world coach you, this [staying] was the best thing to do.”Going out will provide you with experience, but not to the same extent as being here.”
