The weekend closure of the A47 has prompted a plea for drivers to stick to official diversion routes and not clog up roads unable to cope with extra traffic.
Motorists have been warned to expect severe delays this weekend due to a major road closure. The A47 west of Norwich will be closed in both directions between the Honingham and Easton roundabouts from 20:00 GMT on Friday to 06:00 on Monday. It is part of a £300 million project to double the 5.5-mile (8.9-kilometer) stretch of the trunk route between North Tuddenham and Easton. National Highways has implemented lengthy detours and advised drivers to allow an extra 85 minutes for their travels, with a Norwich City match and a local road race expected to add to delays. Drivers will be diverted for miles. Motorists driving westbound should take the A47 east, then join the A11 and head southwest, before exiting the A11 at Thetford and taking the A134 heading northwest.
Drivers should take the A1065 north from Mundford to Swaffham, then rejoin the A47 and travel east. Those traveling eastbound should take the A47 west, exit at Swaffham, and continue south on the A1065. Drivers should take the A134 to Thetford, traveling southeast, then the A11 northeast into Norwich, rejoining the A47.
National Highways cautioned that there will be no access to the A47 from side roads or into Easton via the Dereham Road roundabout. Furthermore, there would be no way to access Norwich Road/Mattishall Road from the Honingham roundabout. Traffic marshals will accompany those living along the affected length of the A47 through the road closure, while emergency services will have access. A Norfolk County Council spokeswoman said the “significant disruption” should prompt people to carefully consider their travel times when making plans. “The diversion route, which will be signed, is long but this is because many of the local roads in the area are narrow and/or just not suitable for the volume of traffic that would usually use the A47,” she told me. Organizers of the Norfolk County Road Race Championship event at Easton College on Sunday have advised runners to approach the venue from the Longwater roundabout.
A notice on the Norfolk Gazelles website stated, “Please ensure you leave adequate time to get to the venue as the race will start promptly at 10am.” National Highways stated it intended to have the new road open by spring 2027.
