Update on Matheus Cunha’s Wolves Release Clause Emerges

A few days before the winter transfer market closed, Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha committed

to the West Midlands team for the rest of his life, and his new Molineux deal included a £62.5 million release

clause, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.

Emmanuel Agbadou, who completed a £16.6 million transfer from Ligue 1 team Reims last month, was the most

costly addition to head coach Vitor Pereira’s squad ahead of the February 3 deadline. However, tying his star

player down to new terms was an essential business decision.

Although Cunha put pen-to-paper on a four-and-a-half year deal which allows him to pocket £60,000-per-week,

having reached an agreement after holding lengthy negotiations behind the scenes, GMS sources have been

informed that admirers will be able to take advantage of a £62.5million release clause.

Early in 2025, Nottingham Forest was one of the teams interested in the Brazil international. The Tricky Trees

were considering making a club-record offer as they looked to qualify for the Champions League, but their mid-

season relocation to the City Ground fell through.

Although Cunha and his representatives first discussed lowering the amount to £45 million in the event that his

current employers were demoted to the Championship, GMS sources have been informed that the buyout amount

will stay the same regardless of which division Wolves are playing in next season.

The 25-year-old playmaker has been at Molineux since making his initial loan deal from Atletico Madrid midway

through the 2022/23 campaign, with the terms including an obligation to become permanent for £44million the

following summer, and he has gone on to become a popular fans’ favourite.

Cunha elected to remain with Wolves despite GMS sources recently suggesting that Arsenal were convinced he

wanted to travel to the Emirates Stadium, but interested parties will be aware that they might leave Pereira

defenseless if they activate the release clause placed into his extended deal.
