Despite being subject to a transfer embargo, Reading manager Noel Hunt has indicated that the club has the option of entering the free agent market to enhance its ranks.
The Royals haven’t paid a player fee in almost five years and won’t be allowed to until they file their financial statements, which are about a year late.
Sam Smith and Tyler Bindon were sold during the window, with Bindon returning to the club on loan from Nottingham Forest until the summer. Dean Bouzanis’ contract was also’mutually terminated’ due to being surplus to requirements.
While loan signings are no longer possible due to the window’s closure, Hunt has indicated that there is still the possibility of signing a free agent, as long as they adhere to the EFL’s guidelines.
“Potentially,” the coach commented on the potential of a signing. “We are still under embargo, so our options are limited. I’m quite comfortable with the group, and we’re not going to rush to bring someone in and endanger the personalities and what we have in the building. If something stands out and we believe it will benefit the organisation and make us stronger, we will look into it.”
Reading are the only club in the UK that has yet to disclose their financial reports, which were due last spring and will cover the relegation season of 2022/23.
“I can’t sign it off, and I don’t want to know anything about it,” Hunt stated when asked about the accounts. “It’s someone’s job, and hopefully it will be resolved soon. As far as I’m concerned, I need to concentrate on what we have within the facility and what we can control.”
Another financial concern for supporters is next season, with only five players tied to the club after this spring.
However, the former Republic of Ireland international has acknowledged that it is the least of his worries right now.
“Right now, we’re just focused on what we do on the pitch. We’re aware of the situation, but we can’t do anything about it right now. As I constantly encouraging the players, they must continue to produce on the pitch for themselves, their teammates, and the football club. Hopefully, that scenario will be resolved much before then, and we can begin making headway in retaining people who we want to maintain and appreciate.”
