More Than 20 Firefighters Tackle Huge Fire in Sunderland’s Villiers Street
A massive fire broke out overnight in Sunderland’s Villiers Street, prompting a large-scale emergency response. More than 20 firefighters were deployed to battle the blaze, which engulfed a commercial property in the early hours of the morning.
The fire started just after midnight, with flames and thick smoke rising from a commercial building. The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) received multiple emergency calls and immediately dispatched crews to the scene.
Firefighters from several stations arrived with seven fire engines and an aerial ladder platform, working tirelessly to bring the fire under control. The intensity of the flames required significant resources, and teams remained on-site for several hours to ensure the fire did not spread to nearby buildings.
Road Closures and Public Safety Measures
Due to the severity of the incident, authorities closed off Villiers Street and surrounding areas to protect the public. Residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to the thick smoke. Several roads, including parts of the A1018 Sans Street and Borough Road, were temporarily closed to allow emergency crews to work safely.
No Reported Injuries but Significant Damage
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries. However, the fire caused extensive damage to the affected building. TWFRS confirmed that the fire was fully extinguished by early afternoon, though crews remained at the scene to dampen down hot spots and assess structural damage.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Early reports suggest that arson may be a factor, and Northumbria Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Fire Service Response
A spokesperson for TWFRS praised the efforts of the firefighters, stating, “This was a challenging incident, but thanks to the swift actions of our crews, we were able to contain the fire and prevent further damage. We appreciate the cooperation of the public and local businesses during this emergency.”
Emergency services are expected to remain in the area for further investigations and safety assessments. Residents and business owners are advised to stay updated through official channels.
For those with information regarding the fire, Northumbria Police have set up a dedicated contact line to assist in their inquiries.
