The Canaries have added three new players, including Matěj Jurásek from Slavia Prague, to fill gaps in their squad depth as they aim to reach the Championship play-offs. In a week that began in potentially nerve-racking territory for the Carrow Road faithful, the contingent spine of the team has now been reupholstered by a pair of young talents of international repute, and the blatantly obvious lack of capable wingers has been alleviated by the arrival of Lewis Dobbin and the aforementioned Czech. However, while on paper the Norfolk side appeared to have pulled it out of the bag at the last minute, with the winter’s dealings now in retrospect, are supporters totally content with the club’s business ahead of a crucial promotion push?
“If Sargent gets injured we don’t really have anyone” – Reliance on American’s fitness is Canaries concern
With the Yellows’ team being established in stone, FLW asked Zeke Downes, a resident Norwich fan commentator, what he wanted his club had done differently during the most recent transfer window. “One thing I wish we had done during the window was bring in a striker, because if Josh Sargent is injured, we don’t really have anyone.” “We have Ante Crnac, but he’s not really an out-and-out striker; certainly, we can fill voids, but it’s not ideal, so we just have to hope Josh stays fit, which isn’t always possible. “So that was the one area that I think we could have strengthened, especially because they’ve let Ken Aboh go on loan to Colchester, I would have expected them to bring in another striker to replace him.
“But then, also, you don’t want to bring in a striker that’s expecting to play, because they probably wouldn’t be, so I can see why they haven’t.” Downes expresses serious concern about a very real possibility: without adequate backup, a further extended absence from an injury-prone Josh Sargent might completely destroy Johannes Hoff Thorup’s attacking possibilities near the conclusion of the season.
Ante Crnac must become a multi-purpose forward option
Croatian forward Ante Crnac has had a divisive debut season at Carrow Road. The 21-year-old joined his new club in late August for a large fee from Polish side Raków and has already made 30 appearances in all competitions. His positional profile is possibly debatable, given he was bought as a centre-forward but has spent the majority of his time on the wide-right. While his five Championship goals thus far are by no means a meagre number, having come against Stoke, Swansea, Plymouth, and Luton, Crnac has yet to find the net against a team positioned in the upper-two-thirds of the table.implying his goal-scoring abilities may still be someway off of the level expected at Norwich City, but with obvious room to improve.
