Between loan stints at Crusaders and Cove Rangers, the defender played for the Under-21 team at Linfield before
joining the Blues in 2019.
Last season, Stewart joined Coleraine when his contract with Town expired. The new club will pay the clubs that
trained the player between the ages of 12 and 21 training compensation, which Ipswich will receive for the 21-year-
old. We refer to this as the “training period.”
One of the two following circumstances must be fulfilled in order for training compensation to be paid:
1) When a footballer agrees to his first professional contract, and
2) Every time a professional is moved abroad until the conclusion of his 23rd birthday season.
Every time a player signs his first professional contract or moves between clubs from two separate national
associations, the new club is required by EA Sports Law to provide training compensation.
“Payment is due at the conclusion of the player’s 23rd birthday season. Regardless of whether the player’s contract
has already ended or not, training compensation is required.
Prior to the player being signed by his new team, clubs must agree to forgo the training compensation.
Otherwise, the training fee is automatically triggered by FIFA, who will ensure that a payment is made in one
instalment before the player’s 23rd birthday, as written in their regulations in RSTP art. 20 and annexe 4.
Only transfers that occur within the EU or EEA are exempt from this rule, which stipulates that “no compensation
is payable if the former club does not offer the player a new contract and cannot justify why it should still be
entitled to compensation.” Naturally, because of Brexit, this does not apply to Ipswich and Coleraine.
The Belfast Telegraph first reported that Town would receive £100k from the Bannsiders as a result, and they
understand that this will be resolved by the FIFA deadline of 30 days.
Two goals have been scored by Stewart in his 19 appearances for Coleraine this season. His side sit seventh in the
NIFL rankings.
