Jamie Carragher expressed his sentiments following Newcastle United’s second goal against Arsenal.
Jamie Carragher has advocated for a ban after seeing an incident during Newcastle United’s game against Arsenal.
Newcastle enters tonight’s Carabao Cup second leg against Arsenal with a two-goal lead following their victory at the Emirates last month. Eddie Howe’s side extended their aggregate lead in just the 19th minute, thanks to Jacob Murphy’s goal. Anthony Gordon made it 2-0 on the night (4-0 on aggregate) in the 52nd minute after Fabian Schar capitalised on careless play by David Raya and Declan Rice. Raya attempted a throw to Rice, who failed to control the ball, and Schar intercepted. The ball then dropped to Gordon, who slotted it. Following Arsenal’s passage of play, Carragher advocated for goalkeepers to be banned from making such passes into midfield players.
On X, he wrote the following: “Keepers need to be banned from playing those passes into midfield players.” Raya’s errant ball to Rice cost Newcastle dearly as they took advantage of the sluggish build-up from the back. Newcastle won 2-0 (4-0 on aggregate) and will play in the Carabao Cup final. They’ll face the winner of Thursday’s other semi-final between Tottenham and Liverpool. Spurs lead 1-0 on aggregate after last month’s victory. Newcastle is in their second final in three years, having previously advanced to the 2023 final and lost 2-0 to Manchester United.
