REGIS LE BRIS has admitted he does not know when Jayden Danns will be available to make his Sunderland debut, but is hoping the situation will become clearer in the next couple of weeks.
Danns was in the midst of signing Sunderland from Liverpool on deadline day when his medical revealed a back problem. He returned to Merseyside for treatment, and both clubs agreed to extend the loan agreement with the understanding that the young forward would join the Black Cats squad once the ailment was resolved.
At this point, it is unknown when that will occur, with Liverpool’s medical experts directing the treatment and rehabilitation process. Sunderland officials will maintain in touch with their counterparts at Anfield, with Le Bris anticipating that a potential timeline for Danns’ comeback may emerge in the coming weeks.
“We don’t know at the moment with Jayden,” admitted Sunderland’s manager. “We’ll probably have to take it week by week.”
“He’s still a young player, so it’s fair to argue that we need to safeguard him. So, we’ll work with Liverpool to determine the best time to bring him into the team.”
While Danns is unlikely to play in the Sunderland first team in the near future, Alan Browne is poised to return to the squad for this weekend’s home game against Watford, and Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson are also on the verge of returning to the first team.
Browne suffered a slight fracture in his leg in November, but has been cleared to return to first-team training this week.
Mundle has also been out since November due to a major hamstring injury, but the winger is expected to return to training before the weekend. Watson is a little further behind in his recuperation from a combination of knee and ankle ailments, but after staying on Wearside when Sunderland turned down a number of deadline-day bids from Brighton, the teenager should be back in the fold by the end of this month.
“Browney is now available and in full training,” Le Bris said. “Romaine will most likely be involved in training by the end of the week. Tommy should be available by the end of next week. Jenson (Seelt) is ready to play, so we have enough of guys.”
