Referee made ‘ridiculous’ error in Leeds United’s Coventry win as Daniel Farke issues ‘annoyed’ verdict
The home crowd may have been worried when Daniel Farke’s team jumped out to a 2-0 lead with less than 30 minutes remaining, with Jayden Bogle increasing the score after a strong run and Joel Piroe sealing his Cardiff brace with a well-taken finish after Manor Solomon’s pass.
Luckily for Coventry, as well as Leeds United’s comic antagonist, former Derby County manager Lampard, the brutality that was on display on Saturday was absent from midweek play. On a night that was frustrating for the Welshman, Dan James was wasteful. The irrepressible Solomon had given Piroe two more opportunities, both of which he could have taken to earn a hat-trick.
In stoppage time, replacement Willy Gnonto attempted to bundle home, but a late offside denied Leeds a third. As Brendan Aaronson was trampled to the ground within the penalty area, the Championship table-toppers were also denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty.
Leeds United defeated Coventry City, and Brenden Aaronson was denied a stonewall penalty.
The American was set up for a shot after James’ cutback, but he was clattered from behind before the Coventry player could even get a toe on the ball. As Aaronson struck the deck at the hour mark, referee Dean Whitestone waved play on from what appeared to be a very favorable position. “I think Leeds have been denied a clear penalty there,” remarked Adam Pope of BBC Sport.
“Anywhere else on the field, it’s a foul. The referee seemed to have taken advantage of the circumstance, which is never acceptable. Stuart Dallas, a former Leeds mainstay, went so far as to call it “ridiculous.” You can see his point, even though not many Elland Road supporters will concur with the well-liked Northern Irishman’s demand that VAR be implemented in England’s second division.
A shocked Dallas laments, “We should have had a penalty.” It’s an obvious punishment. In the Championship, I’m advocating for VAR. We got away with it tonight, so it’s okay, but something like that may change the course of a game!Momentum shifts if Coventry scores. I simply believe that there is too much money at risk in relation to the Championship. It’s absurd.
Farke acknowledges that Leeds ought to have had a penalty kick in the West Midlands.
In his news conference after the game, Daniel Farke also stated, “We should have had a penalty against Brenden Aaronson.” “We were a little irritated that we didn’t have a better scoreline.”Other than this, though, there is nothing to be unhappy about.
The greater picture is all that matters in the end, even though Leeds may feel that the final 2-0 scoreline did not accurately reflect their dominance away from home against a revitalized, play-off-chasing Coventry City team. Leeds took a five-point lead in the Championship standings.
The way Leeds won feels like a big statement of intent as the title approaches, especially since their away performance has been scrutinized at times. The Yorkshire giants lost away games to Blackburn Rovers and Millwall and dropped additional points at Preston North End, Hull City, Burnley, West Brom, Bristol City, and Hull.
