“Probably helped us out” – Norwich City relief expressed at Borja Sainz transfer retention

Sainz had a fantastic debut season with the Canaries, but he has spent a large portion of the current campaign at a higher level. Despite missing the last four games due to the six-game suspension he is currently serving for spitting at Sunderland’s Chris Mepham back in December, the Spaniard is still the division’s top scorer with 15 goals and three assists from just 26 games. However, there is a case to be made that his forced absence was actually a boon.

Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, and Athletic Bilbao were among the teams reportedly interested in Sainz in the weeks preceding the transfer season, and they were all reportedly eager to bring the 23-year-old back to his native country.

Sainz hasn’t played since the beginning of January, though, and it’s possible that missing a string of games where teams invariably vet possible additions has helped Norwich, even though they will have undoubtedly been worried about playing six games without their talisman.

Zeke Downes, our resident Canaries fan commentator, was asked by FLW how glad he is that his team has been able to hold onto Sainz at least through the conclusion of the season.

Zeke explained how the winger’s ban seemed to be a gift in disguise and expressed hope that he can continue where he left off, especially after Sainz’s outstanding performance in the team’s most recent 2-1 victory over Coventry City. “I think the thing with Borja Sainz is his suspension probably helped us out in a way,” Zeke stated to FLW.

We had been depending on him for some months, so he was likely worn out from playing so many games. Prior to his suspension, he was going through a dry spell, although teams may not have been as interested in him during that time.I didn’t hear anything, but we’re not sure if any offers were received.

“I think if he can regain his early-season form, obviously that was supernova in a way because it was pretty much a goal a game – that’s unlikely to happen again – to have him and Josh Sargent in the team when they can both offer lots of goals, it’s only going to be a really good thing.”Hopefully, he can get back to his previous level of play, and if he does depart at the end of the season, it will be for a fair price.”

The play-off attempt will benefit from Borja Sainz’s return to Norwich City.

With victories in their last two games against Watford and Swansea City, Norwich is currently playing well. They will welcome Sainz’s much anticipated comeback at home to Preston North End on February 11 before hosting strugglers Derby County this weekend.

The Canaries are currently in eighth place, two points clear of sixth-place West Bromwich Albion, so a second consecutive top-six finish is definitely within their grasp.

When Sainz returns to action, Norwich’s chances of finishing the season in the top six will be greatly enhanced. Sainz is a reliable match-winner for Norwich, and his goals have been so important that Thorup’s team is even in play-off contention.
