Cardiff City’s historic FA Cup win to be celebrated at museum
The CARDIFF Story Museum is commemorating the 90th anniversary of Cardiff City’s FA Cup victory in 1927 with a special six-month exhibition.
Memorabilia including players’ shirts, official match programs, a replica of the FA Cup itself, and captain Fred Keenor and winger Ernie Curtis’s winning medals will be on display during the exhibition, which opens tomorrow.
On April 23, 1927, Cardiff City defeated Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup, the only time it has ever been won by a team outside of England.
In front of 93,000 spectators, including King George V, David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, and hordes of Welsh supporters who traveled to Wembley to cheer on the underdogs, Cardiff’s Hughie Ferguson scored the game-winning goal.
In 1925, Cardiff advanced to the final, but they were defeated by Sheffield United by a single goal from Fred Tunstall.”We are honored to support this community-themed celebration of our FA Cup victory in 1927,” stated Ken Choo, executive director and CEO of Cardiff City Football Club.It is appropriate to consider the accomplishments of the team led by the unmatched Fred Keenor on the 90th anniversary of our victory. We are incredibly proud of this significant period in our history, which still serves as motivation for both players and fans.
Richard Shepherd, the official club historian for Cardiff City, and Ceri Stennett, the football historian for Wales, lent the objects on exhibit.Being a lifetime Bluebirds supporter, I am thrilled that Cardiff Story Museum is commemorating the team’s greatest accomplishment in this manner, said Coun Peter Bradbury, cabinet member for community development, co-operatives, and enterprise.
“The whole of Wales should be proud of what Cardiff City Football Club accomplished on April 23, 1927.” “In addition to the exhibition, the museum will host football-themed family fun days, so I encourage everyone to get in touch and join us for this momentous occasion.”
