The unspoken error Leicester’s board made last summer which is costing them Premier League safety

Although Ruud van Nistelrooy had wanted to bring in at least four new players, Woyo Coulibaly ended up being his only acquisition.

At this point, it’s difficult to envision Leicester escaping the relegation zone because they are especially lacking at center-back and on the flanks.

The Foxes have an extremely difficult run of games ahead of them and are now two points outside of safety.

City’s defense has been their worst problem this season; they have only kept one clean sheet, in an October 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.

Having said that, it’s now rather obvious that the Leicester board made a significant mistake last summer that has gone largely unnoticed: Leicester made a mistake by sending out Harry Souttar and Ben Nelson, both of whom are currently playing in the Championship. At the beginning of the season, Souttar was sent on loan to Sheffield United, a team vying for promotion, and was considered one of the league’s best defenders until he suffered a season-ending injury. Nelson was also playing well at Oxford United before suffering a quad injury that necessitated surgery.

In fact, Oxford fans compared him to John Stones with many suggesting he’s one of the best players to wear the shirt in recent history.

Nelson is continuing his recovery at Seagrave but the hope is that he can return to Oxford towards the latter stages of the season.

Both could’ve played key parts in the first half of Leicester’s campaign and the decision to ship them out in favour of Wout Faes, Conor Coady, Jannik Vestergaard and Caleb Okoli, has proved a bad one.

There’s certainly an argument to be had that Nelson and Souttar are better than the current quartet of City centre-backs.

Nelson is said to be among Leicester’s most talented young players and is expected to have a significant impact on the team’s future.

Nelson was adored by Enzo Maresca, who frequently started him over the more seasoned Conor Coady during the team’s promotion-winning campaign the previous season.

Nelson, who has received England youth caps, is anticipated to be included in van Nistelrooy’s starting lineup for the Premier League or Championship next season.

The 20-year-old’s future is full of intriguing possibilities.
