West Brom’s deadline day acquisition of prolific Championship marksman Adam Armstrong has significantly bolstered their play-off charge.
The Baggies had already strengthened their squad with three quality signings during the January transfer window – before Armstrong complete a loan switch from Southampton on Tuesday.
The former Coventry and Blackburn Rovers hitman has made his name in the Championshiprace and the statistics back that up.
During his career, he has scored 80 goals in the Championship – with 24 of those coming last season as he guided Southampton back to the Premier League.
Prior to that he spent three and a half seasons under Mowbray’s stewardship at Blackburn Rovers.
In six months in League One leading the line for Mowbray’s side, his nine league goals in 21 games as Rovers earned promotion back to the Championship.
Then over the course of the next three seasons in the Championship, Armstrong solidified his reputation as a potent striker in the second tier.
He netted 55 goals in 139 games in all competitions, 49 of them in the league.
Prior to that he had already bagged 20 league goals for Mowbray at Coventry City, during the Baggies manager’s time in charge at the Sky Blues.
It is clear that Mowbray has managed to benefit from some of Armstrong’s finest spells in his career – and the hope is that he can replicate that in his short stint at Albion.
During his spell at Blackburn Rovers when Armstrong was one of the most vital cogs in his side, Mowbray outlined the various key qualities the striker can bring to a side.
In an interview while at Ewood Park, Mowbray described how Armstrong has different facets to his game but an overall ‘commodity’ that makes him key to any team.
He said: “You can play it into his feet, play it over the top, it never matters whether he shoots with his right foot or left foot.
“He’s as sharp as a razor.
“He looked sharp and every time he got on the ball you always thought he’d get a shot away.
“He can run all day and has to be unselfish for the team but also be selfish in the areas where he can score goals,
“He’s a brilliant kid and he scored 20 goals when we took him at Coventry on loan from Newcastle all those years ago.
“He’s got 21 league goals now with us and he’ll score in any league because he’s a fabulous footballer.
“He’s banged in the goals, he’s a fantastic commodity if you can score regularly in a football team.”
