Paul Mullin new role, Rob McElhenney’s a class act and more things we learned from Wrexham January window.
Wrexham had a frenetic January transfer window, and now that the dust has settled, we’ve looked at some of the key talking points.
After a hectic month at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham fans may be satisfied with the club’s performance after deadline day.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds provided strong support for Phil Parkinson, despite the fact that attacking reinforcements arrived later than expected.
Overall, three new players came in Wales, while many others were permitted to depart the club, either permanently or on loan.
Here are four things we discovered during Wrexham’s 2025 winter transfer window.
In the first part of 2024/25, Paul Mullin’s performance was a major topic of discussion.
He was once the club’s finest player, but his form, along with Ollie Palmer’s, led Wrexham into the market to acquire two new attackers.
Mullin received transfer interest with the arrivals of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez, but remained at the Racecourse beyond the deadline.
On Monday evening, the Wrexham striker joked about remaining on his Instagram story. Fans will be pleased that he is not leaving, although he may be looking for a different job in the future.
Mullin is now injured and may only be considered a fifth-choice center-forward upon his comeback.
Parkinson’s starting lineup is anticipated to feature Smith and Rodriguez, with Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher serving as apparent backups.
As a result, Mullin is expected to appear much less in the second half of the season, and he may be left out of a number of matchday teams entirely.
Wrexham’s co-owner, Rob McElhenney, shown his class once more.
It’s hardly unexpected, but Wrexham co-owner McElhenney demonstrated once more during the winter window that he’s a good man.
James Jones has joined League One club Burton Albion permanently after leaving the Red Dragons last week.
McElhenney left a heartfelt note for Jones and his family, demonstrating his dignity and professionalism.
Many owners remain mute, but the American continues to support Wrexham both on and off the field. Long may it continue.
Elliot Lee’s experiment is ended.
Parkinson has used Elliott Lee as a substitute striker this season, since Mullin and Ollie Palmer have been out of form.
The experiment was unsuccessful, with Wrexham supporters criticizing Lee’s performance up front.
It would be foolish to fully abandon the midfielder, and now that the Welsh team has seven attackers, we should see the best of Lee on a regular basis now that he can play in his natural position.
Wrexham has one problem after the January transfer window.
Overall, Wrexham had a very strong January transfer window and should be ready to make a genuine run for automatic promotion moving ahead.
The club may have a small issue with Arthur Okonkwo’s performance after the winter season.
Okonkwo has struggled since his return from injury, and with Callum Burton certain to miss the rest of the season, Mark Howard is the only credible backup in League One.
Howard has only kept one clean sheet in his seven starts, and it may have been good for Wrexham to recruit a better number two in January.
It’s a modest complaint, but one that might come back to haunt the team in the coming months.
