Welington Santos, a rookie, stood out in Southampton’s most recent victory over Ipswich Town, which has been heralded as a pivotal victory in their relegation struggle.
Paul Onuachu, a teammate, was quick to commend the Brazilian full-back for his outstanding performance.
Welington’s intensity and work rate pleased Onuachu, who scored the game-winning goal in the 2-1 triumph.
The Super Eagles striker was thrilled to see Welington have such a great impact on the game and called his debut a “brilliant” one.
Since it was Welington’s first senior appearance since mid-October, his performance was all the more remarkable.
The 23-year-old defender kept Ipswich’s elusive winger Omari Hutchinson quiet with hard tackles, winning 10 of his 13 ground duels and drawing two fouls.
The game was decided by Onuachu’s goal, which concluded a strong showing by the Nigerian striker.
He was quick, though, to shift the focus from himself to Welington, his teammate.
Onuachu told the Daily Echo, “To be honest, he was brilliant.” “He ran a lot and put in a lot of energy. At the end, you could see that it was the first Premier League match.
“There is a lot of tempo. He was a little worn out in the end, but everyone could tell that he had given it his all.”
“After that, he raced back and forth. He plays well. With the way we train, I believe the coach simply needs to make use of everyone,” Onuachu continued.
Southampton’s success was also largely thanks to Onuachu’s aerial prowess, as the Nigerian striker won an astounding 16 aerial duels.
In the upcoming weeks, his ability to handle the ball and win headers will be essential, and he will be looking to maintain his strong play.
