“Bags of potential” – Huddersfield Town backed to eye new West Ham transfer deal

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Huddersfield Town are currently in the division One play-offs despite losing three games in a row against Bolton Wanderers, division leaders Birmingham City, and Northampton Town.

The West Yorkshire club had a remarkable 16-game unbeaten run in the third division before losing to Wanderers on January 25th, and will be hoping to get back on track with a win over fellow top-six chasers Reading on Saturday.

During the January transfer window, the Terriers added forwards Dion Charles and Joe Taylor from Bolton and Championship side Luton Town, respectively.

But one of their more effective additions this season so far has been fellow forward Callum Marshall, who joined on a season-long loan from West Ham United last summer.

Football League World asked our Terriers fan analyst, Graeme Rayner, if Marshall was a player he’d want to see Huddersfield sign permanently after his loan period ends.

Graeme stated, “Callum Marshall, I really like his endeavour, I like his effort, he has goals in his cupboard, he’s versatile, and he’s young with a lot of promise.

“I’d like to see what he can do if we get promoted, which is a huge if. I’d like to see what he can do in the Championship, and I’m afraid if we don’t, he’ll want to move to that level.

“I don’t believe he is a Premier League level player, at least not yet.

“But I’d like to see what he can accomplish in the Championship, because he often appears to be the one who can break the deadlock in games.

“So, bags of potential, really good attitude, and he’s definitely been what I would consider a success so far in his time here, and if I were him, I’d be wanting to play every available minute, so Town is a good fit for him, for that.”

Terriers’ chances of retaining Marshall may hinge on promotion

Marshall has been a standout in the third tier for Huddersfield this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in 27 league appearances.

While the 20-year-old made only three appearances in the Championship on loan with West Brom last season and did not score a goal, he will undoubtedly prefer to make an impression in the second division next season rather than return to League One.

As a result, in order to keep Marshall, either on loan or permanently, the Terriers may need to earn promotion back to the Championship the first time around.
