It’s been a quiet day in the Sheffield Wednesday deadline day rumour mill.
Unless something unforeseen happens in the closing hour of transfer deadline day, The Star does not anticipate Sheffield Wednesday to undertake any more business in the January transfer window.
The Owls have boosted their squad with the additions of experienced midfielder Stuart Armstrong from the Vancouver Whitecaps and attacking wide player Ibrahim Cissoko, whose loan with Plymouth Argyle was canceled to allow for a fresh loan move from French club Toulouse.
Wednesday is thought to have gone into the last days of the window wanting to strengthen the center defensive areas, as well as to sign players in attack, but with an hour to go, there is little chance of that occurring unless a late deal is made.
Over the weekend, Owls manager Danny Röhl expressed optimism about prospective business if the appropriate possibilities arose, but has maintained throughout a slow-starting window that only players who could make a significant impact on the first team would be considered.
It leaves the Owls’ EFL squad list at 24 players and opens the door to signing a free agent, with Japanese left-back Ryo Hatsuse expected to fall into that category after his contract with Vissel Kobe expired. Wednesday manager Danny Röhl has spoken positively about Hatsuse’s efforts during time training with the club earlier this month, and a signing is still feasible.
No exits are predicted. The Star claimed earlier today that Derby County was interested in Liam Palmer, but such a deal was never likely, as was Turkey’s interest in Pol Valentin. It is understood that Wednesday were willing to loan away one or more of their periphery attacking players, but only if new players arrived.
Gabriel Otegbayo, a brilliant rookie centre-half, signed a new deal with the Owls earlier today.
