Ipswich Town has signed West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

The 28-year-old underwent a medical at Portman Road before to the transfer deadline and will depart The Hawthorns after progressing through the club’s development.

Ipswich is apparently paying up to £5 million.

“I’m looking forward to a new challenge,” Palmer stated. “Ipswich is a team on the rise, and everything I’ve heard about the manager [Kieran McKenna] is great.

“I’m excited to be here and part of a group that has accomplished so much in such a short period of time. I’ve had a fantastic experience at West Brom and wish them all the best.”

Palmer has made 104 appearances for West Brom, who are sixth in the Championship. They have decided to transfer him because they think they have a solid succession plan in Josh Griffiths, Joe Wildsmith, and England Under-19s keeper Ben Cisse.

Ipswich have no intentions to move other goalkeepers, with Palmer filling in for Christian Walton, who is out for many weeks due to a groin injury.

Palmer’s signing provides McKenna with another goalkeeping option after Arijanet Muric has made a series of costly blunders this season, including both goals surrendered on Saturday as Ipswich lost 2-1 at home to bottom-placed Southampton.

Town achieved straight promotions from League One to the Premier League, but they are presently 19th in the table, three points from safety.

Ipswich have also signed Somto Boniface, an 18-year-old Chelsea left-back. He represented England at the under-18 level but did not make a senior appearance for the Blues after progressing through the club’s system.
