Coventry City’s transfer window has raised ‘mouthwatering’ prospect as Frank Lampard awaits cavalry

Coventry City transfer commentary from CoventryLive, as Sky Blues writer Andy Turner evaluates the club’s January transactions

Although Coventry City has had a relatively quiet mid-term transfer window amidst much speculation, the club has made probably one of its most crucial signings in recent years.

Despite discussions about centre-halves and the need for ‘assistance’ on the wings, Frank Lampard has only signed one new face thus far, Matt Grimes, a key midfielder for the time being. The 29-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest in the division and fills a vacuum in the middle of the park for the Sky Blues, which has been needed since Gus Hamer’s departure in summer 2023.

Grimes should be an excellent addition to City’s roster. He is rarely injured and is one of the most reliable performers at this level. The prospect of him teaming up with Ben Sheaf when the captain recovers from injury is tantalising.

His capture is also a wise preemptive move ahead of the summer window, when Sheaf is extremely likely to arrive. The former Arsenal player acknowledged his interest last summer and has made no secret of his ambition to play in the Premier League.

There was no rush to complete the deal before Friday night’s 11 p.m. deadline because he is unattached to any team and can sign outside the window. Lampard has praised Paterson’s quality, fitness, and “brilliant” character in the dressing room over the last three weeks while the 33-year-old has been training with his hometown club, and unless someone comes in and offers him a long-term contract, it appears that Paterson will join City on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

An exciting and flexible forward who can play on either flank, as an offensive midfielder, or as a second striker, the experienced player might round out what has been a good window for the Sky Blues, who have recently found form.

With the return of Haji Wright, Ephron Mason-Clark, and Sheaf from injuries in the coming weeks, Lampard’s side is beginning to appear like a potential playoff contender.
