Birmingham City have announced that they have completed the signing of striker Kurtis Havenhand on a deal until the end of the season, with a further year option if all things progress as hoped. Havenhand, who is 19, was most recently at Sheffield United, joins Blues’ under 21s squad for the campaign.
Havenhand was a player who progressed through the ranks at Bramall Lane and played in various sides through the age categories, but he suffered a serious knee injury which disrupted his development in 2023. On his comeback from that, Havenhand signed his first professional contract with the Blades last summer.
Prior to his injury, Havenhand proved that he knew where the back of the net is; in the 2022-23 season, he bagged 18 goals in 28 matches. Havenhand only returned to full fitness in October and hasn’t been able to force his way into the line-up of Sheffield United’s under-21s this season. The Blades currently lead the Professional Development League, with Blues near the foot of the table.
Blues conducted a topping up sort of transfer window as they look to press on with securing an immediate return to the Championship; they added experienced pair Grant Hanley and Kieran Dowell to help fill various gaps in the squad, while they also ensured that Phil Neumann would be arriving from Hannover 96 in the summer. Blues added left-back Lee Myung-jae on deadline day, before confirming Havenhand a day later.
Blues did allow existing academy products to leave the club; Alfie Chang left to join Walsall’s League Two promotion cause, while Romelle Donovan joined Premier League Brentford. Blues already have academy striker Junior Dixon out on loan at non-league Boreham Wood.
