There are still pockets of fire in voids in the 19th Century building

Over a week after it began, a fire at a disused cigarette factory is still going strong.

In controlled demolitions, about one-third of the Nottingham structure has now been demolished.

On March 30, the Student Lodge on Player Street, the majority of which is undergoing renovations, caught fire.

According to senior firefighters, this fire is the most complicated they have ever handled. On Monday, some 30 firefighters were still on the scene.

‘Seats of fire’

The 19th Century building still had some areas of fire, according to station manager Andy Turner.

“Most of the pockets are in voids of the building construction,” he stated.

“There’s a large amount of timber and insulation from the modernisation that was taking place and that’s where most of the seats of fire are.”

According to him, groups of construction workers were attempting to take down the building’s scaffolding so that additional demolitions could be completed.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Investigations will not begin until the blaze is completely out, which is not expected to be for several more days.
