Posh center-back Fernandez has been Darren Ferguson’s mainstay at the back this season, and the second division is showing interest in him in the winter transfer window due to his outstanding play.
After being released by Gillingham and spending a season on loan at Barnet, the 23-year-old signed a two-year contract with Peterborough in 2021 from non-league team Ramsgate. Over the past 12 months, he has established himself as a mainstay in the first squad.
With the Posh suffering in 19th place in League One, Fernandez appeared destined to move up to the Championship with Norwich. However, he is now thought to be staying at the Weston Homes Stadium. Fernandez has five goals in 33 appearances across all competitions so far this season.
Norwich City end interest in Emmanuel Fernandez
Fernandez was first linked to Norwich on Saturday. According to the PinkUn, the Canaries were eager to sign the 23-year-old before the deadline on Monday, but they still needed to complete the deal.
Posh manager Ferguson then gave the Peterborough Telegraph an update on the situation yesterday, confirming that an unidentified club had accepted a “huge” bid for his player. The PinkUn reported that the team was Norwich, but personal terms were viewed as a potential roadblock.
According to the PinkUn, the Canaries have withdrawn their offer to sign Fernandez as Deadline Day approaches, although it appears that personal terms did not play a significant role in their choice.
Now that Fernandez is expected to finish the season at Weston Homes Stadium, manager Ferguson will be hoping to maintain the motivation of one of his best players as they attempt to avoid relegation in League One.
Peterborough will be pleased to keep Fernandez around after failed Norwich move
Fernandez is obviously well-liked at Posh, and since Norwich is no longer expected to hire him, both Darren Ferguson and the team’s supporters will be happy that he appears to be playing League One for the remainder of the season.
Given the Canaries’ interest, the 23-year-old, who was still playing non-league football in 2023 and has only made 52 EFL appearances so far in his career, has shown to be an outstanding performer in League One and is obviously highly regarded at clubs in higher divisions.
