However, the club may be prepared to sell Watson given what Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has disclosed, and Kristjaan Speakman and Regis Le Bris want to start their own firm.
On the day of the deadline, Downie was asked if he had heard of any possible Sunderland arrivals in a post on X. “The Black Cats just want to sign a new left winger,” he responded.
Putting the two together would indicate that Sunderland is attempting to sign a replacement for Watson, as Downie was responding to a post that said Brighton will continue to press for Watson’s signing.
That would represent a minor change from Sunderland’s desire to acquire a new striker.
Now that it was made public on Sunday that Sunderland intended to sign a Watson successor before allowing him to depart, Downie’s revelation makes a lot more sense.
Watson’s transfer to Brighton therefore depends on what Sunderland can accomplish by 11 p.m. on Monday and whether they can work out a deal with Brighton.
It doesn’t help the Black Cats, who will be focused on Sunderland’s match against Middlesbrough on Monday night.
In the last few hours of the winter window, Speakman will undoubtedly have a lot on his plate.
