B B C Sports: Fulham boss pleased with reaction to come from behind to secure win at Newcastle.
Fulham accomplished the latest in a sequence of comebacks this season, winning 2-1 away at Newcastle.
The result was the west Londoners’ first Premier League victory at St James’ Park since May 2009, and it also meant they had accomplished the season double against the Magpies, having won 3-1 in the opposite meeting in September.
Fulham fell under 1-0 in the 37th minute when Jacob Murphy, who found himself wide open at the back post, slammed in a low cross.
Marco Silva’s team emerged from the half-time break energized, and they equalized 16 minutes later when Raul Jimenez’s effort deflected off Murphy and past Martin Dubravka following some excellent Fulham buildup play.
Fulham sealed the three points in the 82nd minute when Rodrigo Muniz ran away from his defender to head Andreas Pereira’s free-kick in at the front post.
“What a reaction,” Silva told BBC Sport. “that’s difficult to do that against Newcastle, who were ahead at halftime.
“The manner we controlled the game and drove them back prevented them from pressing us high. We began to control the game and had fantastic scoring opportunities; we equalized on a really brilliant counter-attack from us.
“Overall, I believe we deserved three points for our reply.
“It was a frustrating outcome [against Manchester United] since you saw a team that controlled the game and only surrendered when [United] fired for the first time in the 78th minute. It illustrates the majority of the things we accomplished well but did not score.
“When you’re down at this level at home, the best thing to do is react quickly, as we did in a tremendously tough away game against Newcastle.
“It was a long journey for [our fans] to come here and support the team, it’s always nice to come to Newcastle to give them this confidence for them to go home with a smile on their face and they can enjoy the weekend in the best way possible.”
Fulham full back Antonee Robinson concurred with the evaluation of the game’s momentum.
“We were down a little bit in the first half,” Robinson said. “You could sense they were confident, but we were still putting things together; it just wasn’t working out for us in the last third.
“We came in and regrouped for the second half, saying, ‘Look, just don’t surrender any more goals, and we’ll get opportunities,’ which we did.
“We came out flying, putting pressure on them, getting the ball into their half, and scoring the goal. Then the boys came on and changed the game for us this season.”
