Michael Smith’s penalty earns Sheffield Wednesday draw with Luton
Wednesday now trails the top six by two points as a result of the point.
After overcoming a deficit to draw 1-1 with relegation-threatened Luton, Sheffield Wednesday
maintained their campaign for the playoffs.
Before replacement Michael Smith tied the score with a penalty kick, Alfie Doughty gave the
visitors the lead in the first half.
Luton is now two points clear of safety, while Wednesday is now two points outside the top six.
Leaflets were distributed prior to the game as supporters’ group “The 1867” demanded reform in
response to the rising dissatisfaction among Wednesday fans regarding Dejphon Chansiri’s
ownership.
Stuart Armstrong, who joined Wednesday, was listed as a substitute.
Luton added Thelo Aasgaard, who was signed this week from Wigan, to their starting lineup. Josh
Bowler, Kal Naismith, and Millenic Alli—all recent additions—were added to the bench of
substitutes.
Following a mostly inconsequential first thirty minutes, Doughty’s incredible strike from about 25
yards out gave Luton the lead.
Josh Windass shot past the far post, posing a threat for the home team on the left side of the pitch.
Armstrong and Smith were brought on to replace Max Lowe and Callum Paterson at the beginning of the second half by Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.
Mads Andersen was obliged to make a decision after the hosts exerted some pressure.
Wednesday equalised with a penalty on the hour mark, awarded after Gassama was fouled by
Lamine Fanne following a superb run into the area. Kaminski guessed the right way but Smith’s
effort had too much power for him to keep the ball out.
Wednesday continued to press, with Smith going close with an effort which was well saved by
Kaminski before Windass put the rebound well over.
Kaminski came to his side’s rescue again, parrying a Windass shot with Gassama unable to turn in the loose ball.
In the 72nd minute, Matt Bloomfield, the manager of Luton, substituted Daiki Hashioka and Alli for Reuell Walters and Doughty.
Bowler, who had taken Jacob Brown’s place earlier, missed his low shot.
Late in the game, Andersen made a vital challenge on Gassama inside the area.
In time added, Barry Bannan attempted a shot that deflected and was easily collected by Kaminski.
Windass had a shot blocked, and the ball went to Shea Charles, whose attempt was deflected over, as Wednesday surged forward in pursuit of a winner.
