Former Sunderland manager Roy Keane made his feelings about Newcastle United clear, he ‘never fell’ for one thing
Even now, Sunderland and Newcastle United’s rivalry is still one of the most heated and eagerly awaited in the nation. The animosity between the two northern powerhouses is undeniable, even in the face of crossovers with former managers, most notably Steve Bruce, and players, like as Stan Anderson, who captained both teams.
Royal Keane was one Sunderland player who, throughout his playing and managing career, did not agree with those who represented black and white. The former manager of Sunderland, who spent two years at the Stadium of Light, has had his ups and downs with Newcastle United over the years, but he has disclosed the one thing he “never fell for.”

Keane had clearly developed a dislike for the Toon Army during his playing career, most notably with Alan Shearer at the Stadium of Light, by the time he came on Wearside. In his second autobiography, which was released in 2014, Keane himself demonstrated how conscious he was of the fact that he constantly found himself in a little “hassle” with Sunderland’s competitors.
“I always had a bit of hassle against Newcastle,” Keane wrote in his autobiography, The Second Half.I had been sent up there twice. Rob Lee and Shearer had been my opponents. For a team that had won everything, I always thought they were a cocky bunch. “We always got decent results at St James’ Park; it wasn’t a bad place to play,” I said. However, I never fell for the Toon Army, the Geordies, or the harsh reception.
