Confirmed: Frank Lampard completes first Coventry City transfer amid ‘twist of fate’

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive, the Sky Blues gain the services of experienced midfielder from rival Championship club.

Frank Lampard has completed his first Coventry City deal, with the club announcing the signing of Matt Grimes from Championship rivals Swansea City.

The Sky Blues manager finally got his man after the South Wales club accepted a third bid for his services, which was said to be worth £3.5 million to £4 million.

Coventry announced today that the 29-year-old midfielder had joined for an unknown sum, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract at the CBS Arena after a decade with the Swans.

Swansea manager Luke Williams said of the fee: “It’s excellent business all around.” It’s a great deal for us. It’s good for them because he’s an outstanding player. So it’s a good deal all around.

Grimes, who flew to the Midlands on Thursday to complete his medical, will assume the vacant No.6 shirt at City, which was formerly worn by legendary captain Liam Kelly.

Lampard stated: “I’d want to welcome Matt to Coventry City. He is a player I have long respected, and his excellent all-round midfield abilities and experience will make a valuable addition to the club.”

The timing of the fixture is not great, since the Sky Blues go to Swansea this weekend, and Lampard has announced that he will not play on Saturday. “No, he won’t be and I think that’s understandable because he’s been there a long time,” replied the man.

“I think he’s been very respectful about how he’s departed the club, and appropriately so, and I think the emotion towards him, without telling anyone how to feel, would recognise the contribution he’s made to that club over a long period of time. And now he moves on to the next task.

“So I think in terms of the timing of the game, it’s a twist of fate and I think probably the respectful thing for everybody is that he starts with us after that.”

Grimes progressed through the ranks at Exeter City, making over 60 appearances before joining then-Premier League side Swansea City in 2015.
