Rams go sensible route in 1st round of NFL.com’s latest mock draft
The Los Angeles Rams may be persuaded to make a bold selection in this year’s first round of the draft due to their needs at wide receiver, tight end, and quarterback.
Although it’s difficult to blame them for selecting a player at any of those positions, offensive tackle might benefit from some consideration early in the draft, especially if Alaric Jackson decides to leave in free agency.
In order to fill their need at left tackle, the Rams will pick Ohio State national champion Donovan Jackson at No. 26 overall, according to NFL.com’s Eric Edholm.
Edholm thought he could be an NFL left tackle after Jackson switched from left guard to tackle to help the Buckeyes win a championship and performed well on an island guarding Will Howard.
Jackson moves from left guard to left tackle when the Buckeyes needed assistance on the blind edge, and he does so admirably during Ohio State’s run for the national championship.
Jackson selects Josh Simmons, his injured teammate, three picks later.
He’s a versatile blocker who should eventually get an opportunity to play overtime in the NFL.
Given his 6-foot-4 frame, some teams will probably project Jackson to play guard at the next level, where he was primarily used in college.
Although he may not be as long as a typical tackle, he performed well enough in the closing games to be considered for a spot in the NFL.
A player with a championship pedigree like Jackson could break the Rams’ preference for taller, longer left tackles, as Joe Noteboom is 6-5 and Andrew Whitworth is 6-7.
